* This is from my LJ journal and posted in honor of my first QaF community viewing.
Starting today at
qaf_rewind
we will be watching and commenting on the best TV series ever! I'm so excited, this will be my first time participating in something like this so I thought I'd write a brief note about how I discovered QaF.
I only discovered QaF late last year, (btw I’m a boomer, ex-DFH, divorced hetero female). As a new member of Netflix, I rented Brokeback Mountain on Oct 30, 2008. Little did I know that a movie could affect me so profoundly? In addition to the moving love story, I found myself erotically drawn to the vision of two men expressing romantic and sexual feelings for one another.
Who knew? It was an epiphany for me! Prior to that I could never understand why my ex-husband liked pr0n with two women getting it on, all of a sudden I got it! LOL, if I was still speaking to him I’d tell him, “I finally get it, okay?”
Anyway, I searched the web for more BBM info, which led to vanvids, which eventually landed me in QaFworld on YouTube and my life hasn’t been the same since.
The quality of the YT videos wasn’t great and all of season one wasn’t available, but after watching Brian/Gale walk out of Babylon and Justin/Randy walk up to that streetlamp, the ramp shots of both of them and Michael/Hal’s voice over, “…and then HE came along”, I was hooked but good and as it turns out, “in a positive life affirming way”. :D
I bought the entire series set from eBay and I have lost track of how many times I’ve watched 101. From the minute Justin takes a deep breath and closes that loft door, the unbelievable chemistry those two had with one another in their initial ‘coming or going’ scene is seared in my mind forever. The actual deflowering of Justin was another epiphany; I had no idea that men made love face to face. (I’m embarrassed to admit I thought they could only do it doggy style).
For me, from 101 on, QaF was always about Brian and Justin's story, all the rest of the folks are just an added bonus. So to paraphrase the wonderful Peter Paige, “I came for the queer; I stayed for the B/J.”
